tonnellerie vino casa marin the world of oak barrels
What is cooperage
Cooperage (tonnellerie) is the craft of making wooden containers (vats, barrels, kegs) from boards, tightened with hoops. More than three centuries coopers produce high quality oak barrels - sharp, different size tanks and drums that created the fame of the village Vrachesh, area of Botevgrad.
The main material used for the manufacture of our barrels is oak Quercus - conferta. This is the most widely used material in the manufacture of barrels without knots, sapwood and cracks with fine annual rings. Staves are prepared by cleaving the log into quarters, radial rays such as the core does not come out from the one to the other broad side. Barrels are made from high quality natural dried materials drying period of 24 months for the surrounding arcs and 36 months for troughs. The barrel is tightened with galvanized hoops thick 1,6-2.0 mm. They are made by special technology in strict compliance of production processes and technological terms of production under constant quality control. Particularly sensitive time is cautery (toasting) of staves, it is carried out with oak logs. This process causes changes in the chemical composition of the wood which alter the taste of the wine. The main stages of toasting are three-Light, Medium and Heavy.
